A DAUGHTER AND A MOTHER´S STORY

Lady Ruby & Shaye Moss

Lady Ruby and her daughter Shaye Moss have become - in my eyes - through their recent harrowing experience, the latest heroic figures of the common people. Just another example among a long list of many ordinary people in the everyday contemporary American landscape - especially minorities - who have their lives upended due to the incredible injustice and dishonesty that permeates life in America.

And what a story it is! As a writer, from the beginning, I could see and feel how this could turn out. Of course, I didn´t know anything. I couldn´t see the future or foretell what mom and daughter were going to do, or how the people that were against them were going to react, or what the result of this very specific conflict would turn out to be. All I had was a ´feeling´. But it was a beautiful ´feeling´. One that I believe most writers have when they sense a story. One that I hope most of us perceive when we search through our everyday lives for the next story that will inspire us to write.

Because from the beginning I kept my eye on this one. It was just insane! How crazy you have to be to consider and believe (and even after an unfavorable verdict still believe!) the claims brought against this mother and daughter. The first time I heard anything about this situation, and these two women, was during Giuliani's´ press conference on November 19, 2020, (Check the link) when with dark hair dye dripping down his cheeks, he claimed ´voter fraud´.

Then, soon after, he posted a YouTube video right from his home, where he talked specifically about the infamous video from the elections ballot count in Fulton County, Georgia. (Click to see video.)

In this video Giuliani mentioned the election fraud and talked about a ´woman´ specifically and said, ¨look at that woman. Look at her taking those ballots out. Look at them scurrying around with ballots. Nobody in the room. Hiding around. They look like they are passing out dope, not just ballots.¨ He finishes with a smirk.

Many other calls of fraud came right after, but there was one, an incredible call that took place in early January 2021, made by Donald Trump to the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, where he demanded, ¨I just want to find 11,780 votes.¨ ((Please, check the video.)) (At minute 4:44)

During the call, Trump singled out Freeman, by name, 18 times, and called her a ¨professional vote scammer,¨ a ¨hustler¨ and a ¨known political operative¨ who ¨stuffed ballot boxes.¨ After this, their lives would never be the same. At once the orchestrated attacks on the two women began. Hundreds of threats and hate calls filled with racial name calling befell them. There are even taped phone calls to 9-1-1, where you can hear Lady Rudy´s panicked voice begging the dispatcher for help. ((Click to see/hear video))

LADY RUBY - They still bamming on the door. Oh Jesus, where is the police?

911 DISPATCHER - They are on the way, ma´am.

LADY RUBY - Oh, God.

They had to quit their jobs, change their appearance, avoid going out in public, and had to move out of their house. They ended up living and moving from one Airbnb to another, never staying in one place too long. They stopped using their credit cards and started to use an electronic transfer system that helps people who want to keep a low profile.

In December 2021, mom and daughter brought a lawsuit against Giuliani, and accused him of defaming them by falsely claiming that they engaged in fraud while counting ballots, for intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civic conspiracy. (See Civil Action case Freeman vs. Giuliani)

¨THE DEVIL IS A LIAR¨

A few days ago, exactly on Friday, December 15, 2023, a jury awarded mother and daughter $148 million in damages for defamation from Rudy Giuliani. ((Click to see video.))

And after all of that, he still claims he said the truth about the two women and their involvement in a ballot scam. Unbelievable! ((Click to see video.))

This, to me, is the perfect story that could result in a perfect script. A David vs Goliath story. Good vs Evil. Two average, simple women facing the most powerful people in the most powerful nation in the world, facing threats and strangers coming to their home and banging on their door and calling them names and shouting racial epithets. And through all of that, these women are winning! I wish I could write this incredible story, but the truth is, this is their story. I am sure they will have the opportunity to tell their story in a book format. And then a movie.

But just in case, and this is my message for Lady Ruby and Shaye Moss, if they are in the look out for a good, serious, understanding and humane writer that would consider their story something important, an experience that must be told so that none of the injustices that they suffered could ever happen again, or at least for this story to become a warning to those thinking about doing something similar, well, my name is Diego Rojas and here I am, ready to create a great work of art that will humanely demonstrate the emotional tragedy that you had to endure.
