AM

The other day I asked my son,

DAD

Hey boy, what you wanna do when you grow up?

He didn´t hesitate.

SON

A ´YouTuber´, dad.

I was a bit surprised.

DAD

For real? You do understand it is not easy to become a recognized YouTuber, right?

SON

I know dad, but it´s fun.

That was even more shocking. Realizing that my son, at the tender age of 11, already had a clear - what? Knowledge, understanding, a feeling? - of what´s important in life: fun, happiness.

DAD

Ok, great answer.

Just at that moment my daughter ran into the room, always aware and wanting to be a part of an interesting conversation. She is 8.

DAUGHTER

What´s going on?

DAD

I just wannna know what you guys wanna be when you grow up?

DAUGHTER

Oh, I know.

DAD

You do?

DAUGHTER

Yes, an artist, a designer and a hair stylist like mom.

DAD

Wow, that´s great.

If anyone had asked me that question at that age, I wouldn´t have known what to say. I had no idea. Now, as a father and a writer, I love the fact that these kids got the creative gene in them. That´s very cool.

EARLY PM

Later that day, as I was checking some of the Facebook film groups a message popped up that mentioned a one minute, short film contest. A simple idea, simple story, you could use your cellphones. That´s all that was required.

At once, I went to the kids.

DAD Hey, check this out.

Both of them gave it a quick look and said,

DAUGHTER/SON

Let´s do it!

Full of creative energy we got into it. All three of us sat down to brainstorm and come up with some ideas. Quickly we did. Very quickly. We didn´t argue about an idea, just kept adding flavor to it and movements and color. 2 pages later we had it all down. With the wing designs and everything. (Check the pictures below)

After all that hard work, we went to eat outside. We had cheese burgers and french fries. As we ate, we kept on talking about the project., and actually came up with new ideas, shots, camera movements, colors for the wings etc. They also kept asking me how much we could win. I said,

DAD

10,000 yen.

SON

Wow, we could buy a lot of Pokémon cards with that!

DAUGHTER

Or a game for Switch.

SON It´s your money. Whatever you want.

LATER PM

Once back home, we started filming. It went smoothly. The music, we thought about it as we filmed. Because of the limitations of YouTube shorts we decided to play the music from the computer in the background. 45 minutes later, we were done. We saw it a couple of times. The kids loved it. All that was left to do was posting it on YouTube and voilà, we were done. (CHECK THE LINK BELOW)

According to the rules, nominees will be announced on March 1st. Winners, March 14th.

Does it matter if we win? Not really, because we (At least I) have already won! That is our video. We made it together. We had a lot of fun, and I am sure we will continue to create many others. And Pikachu's Valentine will, from now on, live forever on YouTube. I love these kids!

Thanks for reading. Abrazos.
